Brown PLME Essay Guide: How to Write the Two Essays for the 8-Year BS/MD Program

The Program

Brown's Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) is an 8-year combined BS/MD program. Admitted students enter Brown as undergraduates and, conditional on continued academic standing, matriculate directly to the Warren Alpert Medical School without reapplying.

Admit rate: roughly 3%. PLME is one of the most selective undergraduate-entry medical programs in the country.

The Essays

PLME applicants write two supplemental essays in addition to the standard Brown supplements:

  • Essay 1 (~250 words): Your motivations for pursuing medicine.
  • Essay 2 (~250 words): How Brown's Open Curriculum specifically supports your path into medicine.

These are read by a dedicated PLME committee — not generic Brown admissions. The readers include Brown medical faculty. They can tell the difference between a student who has thought carefully about medicine and one who hasn't.

What PLME Actually Screens For

The committee is looking for two specific things:

  • Maturity about medicine. Not "I want to help people." Specific clinical exposure, specific questions you have about the field, specific tension you've already noticed.
  • Genuine Open Curriculum engagement. Not generic praise of a "liberal arts medical education." Specific non-pre-med courses you want to take, and a believable reason why you — a future doctor — want to take them.

Essay 1: Motivations for Medicine

The Bar Is Higher Than You Think

Most PLME applicants have decent clinical exposure. Shadowing, volunteering, hospital work — the committee assumes you have some. The essay is not a resume of those experiences.

The essay is about what specifically you noticed during those experiences that a casual observer would have missed.

What a Strong Motivation Essay Does

  • Opens inside a scene, not a thesis. A moment, not a claim.
  • Names a specific tension in medicine you've noticed. Not solved — noticed.
  • Shows you know medicine is hard. Not in a "I'm prepared to work 80-hour weeks" way. In a "I saw a doctor have to say something I don't know how to imagine saying" way.
  • Ends with a question, not a conclusion. The best PLME applicants are clearly still asking.
"In the outpatient oncology clinic where I volunteer, there is a small room labeled 'Conversation Room.' I didn't understand why it was its own room until I watched Dr. M. walk a patient into it and close the door. When she came out twenty minutes later, she sat at the nurses' station and didn't speak for a while. That's the part of medicine I want to understand — not the diagnosis, but what it takes to carry what you know into that room, again."

Why it works: specific setting, specific observation, specific question about the field that isn't clinical but isn't naive either.

Motivations Essays That Fail

  • Summer shadowing as the whole evidence. "I shadowed Dr. X for two weeks and it inspired me" reads thin at the PLME level.
  • The "my family member is a doctor" origin story without deeper content. It's not disqualifying — but if the essay stops at "I grew up around medicine," it's not doing work.
  • "I want to help people." Everyone applying to PLME wants to help people.
  • Listing accomplishments. Your activities section already did that.

Essay 2: Open Curriculum for Medicine

Why This Essay Trips Up Strong Applicants

Applicants treat PLME as "Brown undergrad + med school." It isn't. PLME is specifically a combined program where the undergraduate years are supposed to be different from the typical pre-med track.

The Open Curriculum means no distribution requirements, no required core. If your entire plan is to take organic chemistry, biochem, physiology, and physics — the committee will ask why you need the Open Curriculum at all.

What This Essay Needs

  • Specific non-pre-med courses or concentrations you want to take. Name them. "Medical Anthropology," "Contemplative Studies," "History of the Body," "Science and Religion," a concentration in Ethnic Studies — whatever is actually true for you.
  • A reason those courses matter to the doctor you want to become. Not a vague "well-roundedness" claim — a specific link.
  • Evidence that you've read the curriculum. Mention an actual course number or program name. "CLPS 0010" or "ANTH 1310." It takes thirty minutes and it signals you're serious.
  • A believable balance. Yes, you still have pre-med requirements. No, the essay should not spend 250 words on them.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating PLME as a prestige prize. Readers notice when the essay is about getting in, not about what you'd do there.
  • Generic Open Curriculum praise. "I love that Brown lets me explore" is not specific to you or to medicine.
  • Writing two essays that don't connect. Essay 1's question should be the reason Essay 2's courses exist on your list.
  • Mentioning the 8 years as a time-saver. Efficiency is not the reason to want a combined program. Commitment is.
  • Copy-pasting from your main Brown supplements. PLME readers see both. Overlap reads as thin.

The Pair Test

Read both essays back-to-back. Ask: does Essay 2 logically follow from Essay 1? If Essay 1 ends on a question about how doctors carry grief, Essay 2's course list should plausibly help you think about that. A random medical anthropology class thrown in for flavor won't hold up.
